Significance of the Thistle:
Common throughout Scotland , the thistle has been a national emblem for centuries. Legend has it that a sleeping army of Scottish warriors was saved from ambush by an invading Norse army when one of the attackers trod on a thistle with his bare feet. His cries raised the alarm, rousing the Scots, who defeated the army, and the thistle was adopted as the symbol of Scotland.
Significance of the Amethyst:
A violet or purple variety of quartz, the amethyst has been used in jewellery since Ancient Egyptian times. Associated with Bacchus, the God of Wine, by the Ancient Greeks who believed it was capable of preventing intoxication. Today it adorns the fingers of Bishops and the Royal Crown Jewels.
